Right, so. I was NOT going to make a post about Valentine’s day, because I kind of figured you guys might prefer 50,000+ words of fanfiction instead (which is still, fingers crossed, going to be done and up today, but I digress). HOWEVER! I have seen so many posts, and had so many conversations, about the ideas of worth and merit that are tied up with this day that I just. I had to, okay. It had to be done. (This is not, by the way, at all meant to be the kind of post that reads “Shame on you, people in relationships, HOW DARE YOU ENJOY THIS HOLIDAY I WILL CUT YOU,” or, indeed, the kind of post that reads, “Shame on you, WORLD, for allowing this to happen, I SHALL NOW RAIL AGAINST YOU IN BITTERNESS.” Despite being in possession of literally every other neurotic tendency you can imagine, I somehow missed the boat on both relationship and body image issues; I have no bitterness in my heart, at least on this topic. You want bitterness, ask me about Trix cereal.) 

So here’s the thing about Valentine’s Day: it might as well be called Feel Bad About Your Life Day, or Fail To Live Up To Expectations Day, or Judge Yourself And Others Based On Adherence (or Lack Thereof) to Arbitrary and Inconsistent Rules Day, or Hallmark Executive Circle Jerk Day. That is just the reality of the situation. Whether you are in a relationship or not—whether you celebrate the holiday or not—there is an emphasis on it within the culture that makes it extremely difficult to ignore. There are hearts in all the shop windows! There are specials airing on TV! The guy you order your sandwich from gives you extra pastrami because he knows there is nothing you love more than…no wait that’s probably just me! But it’s everywhere—you’re hearing about it from your friends and family, single and partnered alike, and it is bound to give some feelings. 

So! Here are some true things about love and relationships and people and self-worth, straight from the mouth of someone who is not trying to sell you a greeting card:

• Being in love is not about stuff. Dating, sometimes, is about stuff, but being in love is not. Being in love is about feeling comfortable with another person. Being in love is about trusting another person. Being in love is about knowing another person well enough that you are not embarrassed when they catch you eating frosting out of the tub at 4:30 in the morning on a Wednesday. 
• Being a full, complete person is not about being in love. Happiness (as in, the condition of feeling positive emotions within a given moment or series of moments), sometimes, is about being in love, but being a full, complete person is not. Being a full, complete person is about feeling comfortable with yourself. Being a full, complete person is about trusting yourself. Being a full, complete person is about eating frosting out of the tub at 4:30 in the morning on a Wednesday and not judging yourself for it. 
• It is harder to be a full, complete person than it is to be in love.
• It is more important to be a full, complete person than it is to be in love.
• It is okay if you are not a full, complete person yet; most people aren’t. Almost everyone isn’t. It is a process. You will get there.
• There is no deadline or time limit on becoming a full, complete person, and, as that is a harder and more important task than falling in love, it is safe to assume that there is no deadline or time limit on that either. 
• There is nothing wrong with you, no matter what you want, don’t want, like, don’t like, date or don’t date. That will always be true.
• Your worth is never going to be determined by how others see you, but by the way you see yourself. That will always be true. 
• The expectations and norms set by society are flawed and far from universal. That…will probably always be true, though I like to try and imagine otherwise.
• You are just fine
• As you are
• No matter who you are dating
• Or aren’t dating
• Or want to date
• Or don’t want to date
• Or what day of the year it is. 
• That will always be true, too.

So: happy I’m Me And That’s Awesome Day, tumblr. May you all find something today that makes you feel full and complete; may you all reject any and all narratives informing you that you are not good enough; may you find yourself a tub of frosting to eat in the dead of night, and someone (be it yourself or another person) who won’t judge you for it. I’ll be here, having cake with that chick from Mean Girls who just wants everyone to be happy. You’ve got all of our love <3
